Nerd Wars

I enjoy shadenfreude as much as the next person. That's why I have been especially amused at the ignominious fall of Lee Siegel (aka, Sprezzatura), who was shitcanned by The New Republic for "sockpuppetry"--i.e., posing as a commentor on one's own blog in order to respond to some of the less genteel posts. That such an insufferable blowhard has been felled by his own pathetic behavior is truly wonderful, proof that some measure of kharma is at play in the universe.

Having said that, I imagine myself trying to explain this story to those unfamiliar with blogs (let alone getting them to care) and I am reminded that, at times, the blogosphere resembles nothing so much as a gigantic junior high school nerd-boy slap fight over the relative merits of Red Dwarf and Dr. Who--amusing to watch, but somewhat embarrassing to be involved in or care about.

(Apologies to all the nerd-girls out there).
